Morgan Park boasts a setting like a English county town. For instance; it has lovely small parks, roundabouts and meandering streets. It is located south of the Beverly neighborhood. Morgan Park consists of mostly single family homes with a few multifamily buildings. The architectural style of this neighborhood is made up of lovely Victorian style homes with wide or wrap around porches, brick bungalows and cottages with spacious well maintained lawns which lend to its more suburban feel.
Architecture
Morgan Parks most notable architecture includes the George C. Walker Library. George C. Walker, then president of the Blue Island Land and Building Company gifted the building and many of the books inside. Charles Sumner Frost designed the original portion of the building costing only $12,000. The library was opened on April 22nd, 1890, expanded by an addition that quadrupled its space in 1929 and received a major renovation in 1995.
Schools
Educational choices in this neighborhood include: Morgan Park High School which is a public 4–year high school and academic center. It opened in 1916 & is a part of the Chicago Public Schools district. Other schools in Morgan Park include Clissold School and Esmond Elementary School (one of the Chicago Public School’s oldest school buildings (built in the 1890’s). St. Walter Elementary School which is a private school is also located in the Morgan Park neighborhood.
